Saturday In leeds

I was up in Leeds visiting my cousin Eleri This weekend . We started the day in a gorgeous Moroccan cafe called Oranaise. http://www.oranaise-cafe.co.uk/ We had some fresh tasty minty tea to wake us up from our night out with some traditional macaroon sweets they were so Moorish they were not on the plate long. Its defiantly worth making a stop here if your ever about Leeds. http://www.oranaise-cafe.co.uk/

From here we took a walk through Hyde Park before heading into the centre to go take a look around Remember When...... an exhibition that is on at the Leeds craft centre and Design Gallery. http://www.craftcentreleeds.co.uk/Remember_when.html. It has a mix of Jewellery, ceramic, wood works and mix media objects. I particularly enjoyed seeing the work my Lindsey Mann. Lindsey uses a range of mix media materials and found objects combined with the use of precious metals to make kinetic pieces of Jewellery.

I also Loved seeing the Work by Jacqueline Cullen who works in whitby Jet To produce these fantastic Statement Rings. Have a look at more of her work at http://www.jacquelinecullen.com

'Remember When'........... Is on Until the 25th June 2011

Whilst We were there we Had a Look around the Henry Moore Exhibition That was on at the Leeds art Gallery http://www.leeds.gov.uk/artgallery/Leeds_Art_Gallery/Exhibitions.aspx . There is a Huge selection of his work there. It was interesting to see them as I have admired his work for a long time now and I am inspired by his use of smooth curved lines and shape.

RUST !

I Was up in Aberdeen for new years this year visiting my mum, dad and sisters.  before having to catch  the train back down to wales we went for a picnic and walk about 45 minutes drive north of Aberdeen! It was a really cold wet and windy day. so we ate our lovely sandwiches in the car before wrapping up warm and heading out. There is something cosy about all being squished up in the car on a cold day eating a picnic .

We went by a little fishing port where they had  metal containers storing all the lobster pots and fishing Nets. The Photos above are of one that that had the number 17 on and that was the most rusty . I love the mix of colours and the speckle of the white coming through the navy blue. I think there is a hidden beauty to rust and the layers it builds up.

I think this is the direction my work is going to take next. lots of testing of materials being worked in different ways almost being discarded.

Paper Card Nylon by Rut-Malin Barklund

Paper,Silver , Nylon Thread

MDF, Silver and Iron

MDF and Silver Brooches

Rut-Malin Barklund Is a Swedish Artist who works with nylon MDF  silver and card to create these fantastic pieces of Jewellery. I love how they seem very simple and clean and when at closer look the detail of the layers put together are well thought out and how they also appear as a solid piece.

I came across Rut Malin when researching artists that use non-precious materials to make precious objects, This was the question for my dissertation whilst studying applied arts. Just because a material is non precious it doesn’t mean it cannot become precious through application of technique!

Have a look at more work my Rut-Malin  http://www.rut-malin.se/

Silvertruck at Ruthin Craft Centre

I have recently visited the  Silverstruck  exhibition that is currently on in the Ruthin Craft Centre. The work I saw there was fantastic I particularly like the piece above . Nest Vessel made out of silver and 24ct Gold plated silver by Amy McKay  http://amycmackay.com/index.htm

This piece in the picture below is by Alex Ramsay http://www.alexramsay.co.uk/ . It really court my eye and drew me in,by the detail of the hand pieced patten and strong structured shape. It catches the light creating some really interesting shadows. The exhibition is on until 27th March . Really worth a look if your near by. x

Neck Pieces

Laser cut neck pieces by http://www.emmayeo.com emma works with wood veneer that has been laser cut and inscribed. I think they are such elegant pieces of work and beautiful objects in there own right.

Laser cut Box's

I have been lucky enough to Try out and have a go on a laser Cutter . With the kind help and guidance from Paul Flour at www.thincdesign.co.uk . I was very impressed to see what the machine was able to produce above is an image of my new packaging for my jewellery that is on sale on www.madebyhandonline.com. The text and Logo on these box's have been etched away by the machine making the text raised. giving it a lovely texture that makes you want to touch it. My business cards below have also been etched and then laser cut out into the chosen shape. I have used a two tone mount card, that feels tactile to touch.

My work is also on display and available to buy at http://www.mickerloo-arts.co.uk
